What a Grand Slam Really Means
A Grand Slam originally meant winning all four majors, Wimbledon, the French, the US and the Australian, in a single calendar year. Don Budge did it first in 1938, Connolly in 1953, Laver twice.
The modern usage covers career and non calendar versions. Steffi Graf added Olympic gold in 1988 for the Golden Slam, still unique.
Djokovic completed the career version three times over, while the calendar remains the rarest prize in tennis..
