The Spanish scrambler beat Steffi Graf to win the 1989 French Open at 17 and won it twice more, plus the 1994 US Open. She reached number one in 1995 and won six major doubles titles, banking on retriever tenacity against bigger hitters. She helped Spain lift five Fed Cups.
