Arthur Ashe
First Black man to win the US Open, Wimbledon and the Australian
Overview
Ashe won the inaugural Open Era US Open in 1968 as an amateur lieutenant, the Australian in 1970, and Wimbledon in 1975 at 31, dismantling Jimmy Connors with clever serving. A thoughtful champion, he fought apartheid and founded programs for inner city youth. The US Open stadium bears his name. He died in 1993, remembered for grace on every front.
