The Argentine with the bulging biceps and heavy topspin swept the 1977 season, winning Roland Garros and the US Open on clay at Forest Hills, 46 straight wins and 16 titles. He added the Australian Open in 1978 and 1979. He popularized tennis across South America and inspired generations of Argentine clay courters.
