The smiling Brazilian won Roland Garros in 1997 as an unseeded 66th ranked outsider, then again in 2000 and 2001, ending 2000 as world number one, the first South American to top the rankings. His one handed topspin backhand was beauty itself, and he turned Brazil into a tennis country.
