The Bucharest genius won the 1972 US Open and 1973 French Open and became the first official ATP number one in August 1973. His touch, angles and improvisation were sublime, matched by legendary tantrums and comedy. He led Romania to Davis Cup finals and reached four major finals, holding number one for 40 weeks.
