Virginia Wade
Wimbledon champion in the Silver Jubilee year of 1977
Overview
Wade won the first US Open of the Open Era in 1968 and the Australian Open in 1972. Her Wimbledon victory in 1977, in the year of the Queen Silver Jubilee and the championship centenary, made her a national heroine. No British woman won the singles title again for decades, and she later became a long serving television commentator.
