Kafelnikov won the French Open in 1996 to become the first Russian man to take a Grand Slam singles title and added the Australian Open in 1999. He reached world number one that year and won Olympic gold at Sydney 2000. A prolific doubles player as well, he collected major doubles titles alongside his singles success during a long and busy career.
