Australian Open
The Happy Slam in Melbourne since 1905, first major of the year
Overview
Founded in 1905 and rooted at Melbourne Park since 1988, the Australian Open opens the Grand Slam year in January. Blue hard courts, three stadiums with roofs including Rod Laver Arena, and a festival atmosphere earned it the nickname the Happy Slam. Margaret Court Arena honors the record champion, and attendance passes 800,000 across the fortnight.
