Overview
Riggs won Wimbledon in 1939 as a 21 year old, taking singles, doubles and mixed, and the US title that year. A shrewd strategist and gambler, he became world professional champion in 1946 and 1947. In 1973 he played Billie Jean King in the Houston Astrodome before 30,000 and a worldwide audience, losing in straight sets, the famous Battle of the Sexes.
