The red haired American with the booming backhand won six majors in a row, the 1938 calendar Grand Slam, Wimbledon, Forest Hills, Roland Garros and Kooyong, the first man ever to sweep all four in one season. He turned pro in 1939 and war took his best years. Many who saw both called his backhand the best in history.
