US Open
The United States championships since 1881, hard courts at Flushing Meadows since 1978
Overview
First played in 1881, the US Open became the first major to offer equal prize money in 1973. It moved to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 1978, and Arthur Ashe Stadium, capacity about 23,700, is the largest tennis stadium in the world. Night sessions, tiebreaks at 6-6 in sets, and New York noise define it.
